Gambling is not a way to make money
Pokies return less than they take over time. That is how the operator pays for the games and the licence. A session can go well; the maths over months does not. Treat money spent on pokies as the cost of entertainment, decide the amount before you start, and never use money that is committed to rent, food or bills.
Signs worth taking seriously
- Spending more than you planned, or more than you can afford, more than once.
- Chasing losses with a bigger deposit.
- Hiding deposits or time spent playing from people close to you.
- Borrowing money, selling things or using credit to keep playing.
- Feeling anxious, flat or irritable when you are not playing.
- Playing to escape stress, debt or a low mood rather than for fun.
None of these mean you are weak. They are common responses to a product built to keep you playing.
Tools that work
Australian licensed wagering services must offer deposit limits, and most let you set them in account settings. Offshore casinos usually offer the same tools, though enforcement varies.
- Deposit limits. A daily, weekly or monthly cap on deposits. Set it below what you would spend on a bad night, not at it.
- Time limits and reminders. Session timers and reality checks that show how long you have been on.
- Cooling off. A short block on your account, often 24 hours to 30 days, requested through support or account settings.
- Self exclusion. A longer block, usually six months or more, that stops you opening or depositing into an account.
BetStop and the offshore gap
BetStop is the national self exclusion register for Australian licensed wagering providers. Registration is free, and it blocks you from opening new accounts and depositing with services that hold an Australian licence. You can register at betstop.gov.au.
The limitation matters here. Most casinos reviewed on this site hold an offshore licence, usually Curacao, and are not covered by BetStop. Registering will not block them. If BetStop is part of your plan, you will also need to close or exclude your accounts at each offshore site directly. A gambling block on your bank card, or a filter at home, can add a second layer.
